Important Notes on Education Expenses for Tax Settlement

![PLACEHOLDER_IMAGE]

While the Hometax system is very convenient, it often misses education data for foreign residents or certain specialized expenses. Knowing which items are deductible can prevent you from missing out on these benefits.

1. Deductible Expenses (15% Credit)

You can receive a tax credit of 15% for the following expenditures:

  • Early Childhood Education: Tuition for daycare, nurseries, and kindergartens (including meals and after-school activity fees).
  • K-12 & University: Tuition for Elementary, Middle, and High School, as well as University.
  • School Uniforms: Purchases for middle and high school students (maximum 500,000 KRW per year).
  • Textbooks & Field Trips: Costs for textbooks and practical experience activities.

2. Non-Deductible Expenses

  • Overseas Schools: Tuition paid to schools located outside of Korea (e.g., if your child is studying in your home country). This rule is strictly applied to foreign workers.
  • School Bus Fees: Transportation fees for school bus services.

3. What to Do if Hometax is Missing Data

Hometax often fails to automatically update tuition fees for international schools or school uniform purchases. To claim these deductions, you should:

  1. Contact: The school's administrative office or the uniform shop.
  2. Request Documents: Obtain an "Education Payment Certificate" (교육비 납입증명서).
  3. Submit: Provide the original document (or a scan) directly to your company's HR department during the tax settlement period.

[!IMPORTANT] Check your education expenditure list on Hometax early. If items are missing, request the certificates from the school immediately to meet your company's settlement deadline.
